The lesson here is to continue our path of progress in renewable energy, says Santosh Kumar Sarangi

The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said on Thursday that one of the key discussions and learnings from the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo (BRESE) 2026 was for countries like India to enhance self-reliance in critical technologies and components, particularly the clean energy manufacturing ecosystem.

“The lesson here is to continue our path of progress in renewable energy and some of the things which are discussed in the CEO roundtable obviously referred to reducing critical dependence on particular geographies. So, if we are beholden to particular geographies for certain items, there is a need for thinking about manufacturing in those segments,” Sarangi said responding to a question of key discussion themes emerging from the summit. He did not elaborate on which geography.

In this direction, the CEO roundtable at the BRESE appreciated India’s efforts in clean energy manufacturing such as the Approved List of Models and Manufacturer (ALMM). This becomes critical as the West Asia conflict led to the biggest disruption in the history of the energy sector. The resultant diesel and jet fuel supply crisis has severely impacted small and least developed countries.

“So, a lot of CEOs have actually appreciated the ALMM framework which MNRE has implemented for modules and wind turbines and requested that similar things should be tried out for components, battery storage systems etc. So this was a recurring demand from the CEOs and on this MNRE has remained engaged with the industry. And whatever needs to be done to promote domestic manufacturing that we will definitely work,” the Secretary added.

Clean energy impact

India also shared its experience in how clean energy generation helped the country blunt the impact of the West Asia conflict and the resultant energy supply crunch. For instance, renewable energy helped India save more than $100 billion in fossil fuel imports, equivalent to roughly ₹9.46 lakh crore. Besides, India has achieved utility-scale solar generation costs of $30–35 per megawatt-hour (MWh), or roughly ₹2,840–3,313, which is the lowest in the world.

Organised from November 2-5, the BRESE 2026 brought together global policymakers, industry leaders, investors, technology providers, researchers, startups and international institutions on a common platform to advance the clean energy transition.

The Summit witnessed strong participation with over 75,000 visitors, 400 plus exhibitors and more than 627 speakers across 113 sessions, with representation from 135 countries with about 800 delegates, including the Partner countries, ISA members, international organisations, and diplomatic missions located in India.

High-level ministerial participation included 32 international Ministers, 6 Chief Ministers and 10 State Energy Ministers, reflecting strong engagement from both national and sub-national stakeholders.
